Remembering Ajike Owens: Family Mourns After Deadly Neighbor Dispute in Ocala, Florida

The Ocala, Florida community is grieving the tragic loss of Ajike Owens, a 35-year-old mother of four, who was fatally shot during a neighbor dispute on June 2, 2023. Owens’ story is highlighted in the recent ABC 20/20 episode, “The Neighbor from Hell”, which aired on April 3, 2026, exploring the harrowing events and their impact on her family.

Owens, a single mother, had been involved in an ongoing conflict with her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, which began in February 2022 over children playing near Lorincz’s home. On the night of the shooting, Owens confronted Lorincz after her nine-year-old son, Israel “Izzy” Owens, reported that Lorincz had thrown roller skates at him. Lorincz shot Owens through a closed door, tragically killing her in front of Izzy.

Lorincz was arrested and charged with manslaughter with a firearm. Following a week-long trial, she was convicted of first-degree felony manslaughter and sentenced to 25 years in prison. She is currently appealing the conviction.

Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, relocated to Ocala to care for her grandchildren after the tragedy. In interviews with 20/20, Dias described the ongoing grief her family continues to face. Her children—Izzy, Isaac, Afrika, and Titus—have been coping with life without their mother, while drawing strength from her memory and teachings.

The case garnered national attention, highlighting not only the dangers of neighborhood disputes but also the resilience of a family seeking justice. Neighbors and community members continue to remember Owens’ life and advocate for safer, more compassionate communities.
