Donald R. Brake, Fairfield Obituary – Beloved Educator and Community Leader Passes at 91
It is with profound sadness that the Fairfield community mourns the passing of Donald R. “Don” Brake, 91, who passed away unexpectedly on April 2, 2026, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital Skilled Care Unit. Don Brake was celebrated for his lifelong dedication to family, education, and community service.
Born on October 21, 1934, in Albion, Illinois, Don graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. He married Susan Childers in 1958, a partnership that remained a central joy throughout his life.
Don devoted his career to teaching as a 7th-grade science teacher and shop instructor in Fairfield Public School District 112, where he inspired generations of students. Beyond the classroom, he founded a stamp club at Center Street School and actively engaged in hobbies such as fishing, camping, cooking, and traveling with his wife across all 50 states and several countries.
A pillar of the community, Don contributed through Boy Scouts, Kiwanis, church volunteer programs, and hospital service. At Cornerstone Community Church, he was known for his generosity, participating in food drives and preparing meals for those in need.
He is survived by his wife Susan, children Stephen and Jennifer, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Cornerstone Community Church, with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. until the service.
