Donald R. Brake Obituary, Death – Fairfield Mourns Beloved Educator and Community Member

The Fairfield community is mourning the loss of Donald R. Brake, 91, a beloved educator, volunteer, and lifelong contributor to local life, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.

Born on October 21, 1934, in Albion, Illinois, Don earned his B.A. in education from Southern Illinois University in 1957 and dedicated his career to Fairfield Public School District 112 as a 7th grade science teacher and shop instructor. Beyond teaching, he shared his love of stamp collecting, organized community activities, and served as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts, Kiwanis, and Fairfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Don was also an avid traveler, fisherman, camper, and hobbyist in genealogy and stained glass crafts. He is survived by his wife Susan, children Stephen and Jennifer, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 6, at 12 p.m. at Cornerstone Community Church in Fairfield, with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or Cornerstone Community Church.

Don Brake’s life reflected dedication, generosity, and love for his community, leaving a lasting legacy cherished by all who knew him.
